Monday Night Issue 4
This issue draws inspiration from the remarkable piece "Long Distance" (1976-2005) featured in the exhibition "Surrealism Beyond Borders". Created by Ted Joans, this 9 meter-long "exquisite corpse" drawing evolved as it travelled the globe, inviting artists to contribute. In the spirit of this collaborative journey, our zine showcases an original artwork measuring 4 metres long, which has journeyed through the mail across England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France and Germany.
Over 6 months, 13 contributors have enriched this piece with their own visual language, expanding on the Surrealist tradition of collective authorship. As the Surrealists believed, playful games can provide a key to unlock the unconscious, and "release the visual poetry of our collective creativity". We established a set of rules to guide our process, one being to extend the drawing outward, fostering a dialogue with the previous contributions.
Lebanese-American artist/poet, Etel Adnan likens leporellos to a kind of voyage, like travelling along a river. The unfolding pages create a continuous experience, inviting viewers to engage from multiple perspectives. We hope you enjoy the journey through space and time as you turn the pages of this zine.
